What Students Have to Say
Beautiful wise soul! Don’t miss it if you have the chance to be around his energy!!!

Breathing seems to be natural as long as we are alive, but I have learned from my teacher Joe Roberson that we are often unaware of the important role breath plays in our well being.
My busy world, filled with stress and anxiety, drove me to the class that Joe was offering online – Breathing Practices, a one month long seminar on various breathing techniques that help align breath with spirit, calming breath techniques, and others which assist one with anxiety, sleep and more.
The small group atmosphere gave the opportunity to ask questions relating to physical and emotional issues that humans encounter due to the stressful lives that we lead. Joe carefully sequenced the classes, building on techniques from simple to more involved, to address the issues we discussed as a class.
Calming 4-7-8 Breath is one of my favorites. Now that I know what it is and what it can accomplish, I find myself utilizing it frequently as stress builds, even when I am sitting in meditation. I use Calming 4-7-8 and other techniques I learned during this course to help my mind and body feel more connected.
I have known Joe for many years. I took his Yoga, Pranayama, and Meditation course at the Yoga Center of Columbia way back in the early 2000’s. We reconnected recently with this breathwork class. Joe is a very soft-spoken man with many years of experience in the field.
His book on breath work, One Half-Breath at a Time, and his approach are natural and holistic.
He is approachable even with issues that are quite private; he caringly addressed mine. Our exploration of Diaphragmatic Breathing, Coherent Breathing, and the anatomy presented to the class shows Joe’s deep understanding of the physical body and how the breath works through the organs to feed our heart, our mind and our spirit. I highly recommend this class to new breathers or experienced breathers alike.

The feedback was great (as always) the students loved their time with you and said they learned a lot on many levels about the breath, thank you!
I saw a client from the 8 week weekend this am and he told me about a teaching from you that has had a big impact.
It was what you said about not waking up your kids by yelling. My client has since changed the way he wakes up and interacts with his daughter and even got rid of the alarm clock that was “yelling” at her. Within 3 days, after being awoken by her dad and him inviting her to start her day by doing yoga with him, she did join him.
Thanks for the teaching of gentleness for him and his daughter. Its had a big impact.
Love, k
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I’m Heera, one of the regulars from your noon class at Studio DC-DuPont. I was all mentally and physically prepared to come to your class today at 5pm, but the rest of my life got in the way, and I am actually really disappointed that I wasn’t able to make it. It would have been my last class with you, as I’m leaving the country in a couple of days to go back to China.
I’m a final-year medical student, an aspiring emergency physician, Reiki practitioner, and I live in China for 10 months in a year, where I am getting my medical degree. This has been my last trip home to DC before I return to China for my last semester of school, and I couldn’t imagine having found a better place to invest so many hours than doing yoga at StudioDC. I haven’t been practicing yoga for very long — maybe not even a year yet, but I’ve fallen so completely in love with it.
Finding good yoga teachers is like trying on shoes — I realized I had to try on many of them in order to find what suited me. I fell into your class the first time as it was simply convenient, but quickly learned to really jive with your teaching style, your simple, but technical and demanding structure, and general air of contentedness. I love the details of anatomy that you pepper into descriptions of poses and how we flow through them. It always offers me a wink and a nudge to my medical background that makes me feel complete, because everything in my life has come full circle, and I feel solid in my footing that I did choose the right career path. My favorite parts of your class are where you demand the corners of the mouth to be lifted during really difficult postures. Finding even the slightest bit of joy in everything I encounter is something that I really try to stay true to.
One thing I really do wish to do is establish a home-practice that I actually adhere to. I’ve always fallen off the wagon when I try to tell myself I’ll do 10 or 12 sun salutes every day if I don’t have the luxury of attending a class, but I just can’t find the discipline to do it myself. I’d really like to attend the teacher training or some kind of yoga intensive at some point when I have the time. I’m more interested in doing it from a personal and spiritual development perspective than anything else, because I’ve experienced the transformation from a life without yoga, to a life where the lights are turned on when yoga is there.
Thank you so much for being so patient and diligent with your teaching. I thoroughly enjoyed your classes, and hope to see you again when I return in February.
Has anyone ever told you you sound just like John Malkovich?
I still hear your voice in my head whenever I practice. -?
It is irresponsible of you- and I would even say immoral of you- to deny the world your gifts, gifts this world is so in need of, just because of some story, some past trauma, some bullshit that you keep letting get in the way.
Loved the class!
When I first started you stated that I was top heavy and I have significantly noticed a huge difference. I still have a way to go but your class allowed my personality to explore things that I never thought
were possible.
Your energy, spirit, and knowledge of yoga has had an enormous impact on my life. I will be forever grateful.
I hope our paths cross again. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me learn about yoga and grow in my own journey of healing.
